I would start by answering this question with another question, “What does the immigrant want to do when they get here?”
But also, good for whom? For Canada, for the immigrant, for both?
To Whom Does Canada Belong?
As I said a few breaths ago, in reacting to comment, I would advise that prospective newcomers consider that other peoples have more titles to Canada than any foreigner, or like myself, a descendant of emigrants, ever will.
There is something that honestly I find a little disturbing in some of the inquiries I see about migration to Canada. Numerous of those observations come from the developing society.
Various of those who ask concerning visas do not seem to be informed that Canada is land stolen by colonizing European countries. Those countries penetrated North America and attacked and brutalized and in some cases attempted to exterminate the native peoples, all of the personalities of color. Some of those countries were the same ones that attacked most of what is now the developing world and mastered, exploited and humiliated the peoples who were there.

Please remember that Canada was established on a terrible historic justice. There is nothing that immigrants can do about it other than be aware and be understanding and supportive of Canadian aboriginal people who are trying to recover what is left of their heritage and their resources. If you do not you are essentially accepting the rationalizations of European colonizers who asserted that it was their destiny to rule the developing world.
While it is understandable that a recent immigrant will be strongly focused on getting economically established, at some point they do need to come out of that mode. If they don’t they will not be real shareholders in Canadian life. They will have nothing to offer their kids about how to live in Canada.
Some immigrants do look around them and try to understand Canadian society around them. Others don’t. They are doing damage to the people who are already here.
I once knew an immigrant who was confused when I asked him whether he had ever read a book about Canada. He said he didn’t have the time. However, he had inhabited in Canada for years and had a healthy home. He had wedded a Canadian-born person from another culture. He was a residential real estate agent, a type of profession that already has plenty of Canadian participants.
This gentleman was living in a foam. In terms of his life, he was down in a crouch. He would talk wistfully regarding going back “home”. However, that country was poor and politically most unstable. There was nothing for him there. I would strive to suggest what value he had for Canada.

If you decide to move to Canada anyway:
Let’s see what are the Cons of moving to Canada?
- Make sure you bring lots of cash to live your Canadian dream, so you don’t have to depend on Canadian salaries.
- Our job market sucks big time. Expect very low pay. If you need to work when you get here, have a job lined up. Jobs here are not easy to get. Many Canadians work at two to three different jobs to have a large enough income to survive.
- Do you know about Hunger in Canada? According to Food Banks Canada, thirteen percent of Canadians live in a state of food insecurity, mainly caused by low income, which consistently affects more than four million of us at any given time.

- We don’t have Free Healthcare as everyone tells you. The Canadian health care system is dysfunctional and sucks. What does Free Health Insurance in Canada mean? In some provinces, you pay Health Insurance premium, unless you’re on a minimum income. The Canada Health Act does not cover prescription drugs, home care or long-term care, prescription glasses or dental care. Costs for prescription drugs come out of your own pocket unless you have extended Health Insurance. Lots of people can only afford extended insurance when it’s paid by their employer. And, learn to be patient; it’s not unusual to be on a two-year waiting list until you get surgery. People who have the money often go to the US to have surgery done. The Canadian health system sucks big time.
- It is no secret that Canada has a drinking problem. Some say it’s caused by boredom and a lack of anything better to do. The strict drinking laws are old-fashioned and cause the opposite of what they’re supposed to do. Many high school kids are already addicted to alcohol. The legal drinking age in Canada is 19, in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec 18.
